Disability

Recently watched a video on social media. It was a little girl in the video who was blind by birth. She underwent an eye surgery to restore her vision.  The video was of the time when the doctor removed her bandages from her eyes and then she was able to see for the first time. Her reaction after seeing the lights and colors was so precious!
I have also worked at a hearing handicapped institution as a speech language pathologist. The reaction of little babies after the hearing aid fitting or cochlear implant is priceless! Their first experience of hearing sound is so precious!
Looking at this I always feel, we are always busy focusing on something that we lack. Most of the times the things that we think we are lacking are very unimportant and minor. We are so thankless to universe even after we are bestowed with all intact five senses, average physical abilities, typical cognitive skills etc. We have no interest to focus on our awesome abilities. We are too busy to look at them. Busy in counting our limitations instead of appreciating and using our assets. What a waste of time and energy!
We have decided that the persons with disabilities like blind, hard of hearing, physically or mentally challenged are weak due to their impairments. They are handicapped. They need to be protected. They need our help. It is definitely true to some extent.
Though, most of the times when I look at them, I see an amazing skill they posses that most "typical" people lack. The ability to focus on their assets.
If a "normal vision" person is left alone in the dark or in the smoke filled room, he/she might get lost or might trip over something. On the other hand, a blind person will be easily able to walk through it without any botheration from smoke or dark. Why? Because a "typical" person is focusing on thoughts like "there is no light" or "the visibility is so poor". Unlike the blind person. The blind person is focusing on his senses which are intact. The sense of hearing, smelling, touching etc. Who is disable?
We have so much given by the universe. We also have the free will to use it. To make best out of it. We are so busy to look at the "lack" that we completely ignore the "abundance". The disability to use one's assets is equally unfortunate as having an impairment. Just think about it!

  1. Well articulated..we indeed waste precious time on things that we do not have rather than rejoicing our gifts!
